Roanoke Island was first settled by English colonists in 1587. Three years later the entire band disappeared, leaving a mystery for the ages. Take an evening repast at 1587 Restaurant and you may think yourself lost because surely food of this caliber doesn't equate with this sleepy little town. A table by the windows affords a view of sailboats and of Festival Park. Start your dinner with a nightly special such as tuna poke or paella-style risotto with shrimp and chorizo. Several crisp salads make good palate refreshers and one or two change seasonally. For the main course, be sure to pay attention to the nightly specials --- you may find a pasta dish like orecchiette with peas and seared scallops along with the chef's freestyle fish selection, often steamed in a banana leaf. On the menu you'll see more freshly caught seafood --- tuna served Asian-style with soba noodles and lemon grass, or a classic bouillabaisse. For heartier plates, there's filet mignon, a NY strip, osso buco and more. Desserts are house-made and change daily. To top it all off, the wine list is pleasingly varied --- you may even encounter a favorite bottle from Alsace.
