The Berghoff Restaurant Review:

Tourists and locals alike line up for lunch and early dinner at this bustling institution, which has been at Adams and State Streets since 1898. They come as much for the old-world feel as for the food. Murals and photos of early Chicago, warm wood paneling, stained glass and gleaming chandeliers conjure up another century, as do waiters in bow ties and aprons wending their way among the crowds, staying calm amid the frenzy. Come for the German classics, like Bavarian pretzels with cheddar sauce, potato pierogi, brats, knockwurst, sauerbraten and schnitzel. For sides, choose among German fried potatoes and rich creamed spinach. Seasonal fruit cobblers are the best finishes. Custom-made beers, bourbons and root beer have loyal fans. A quick-serve café (popular among happy hour goers for its affordable pints and bar bites such as beignets, sliders and pretzels) is located next door.
