Bernie's is located in the midst of the Alberta Arts District, surrounded by galleries and shops. One of its major draws is its setting: a cozy, inviting dining room and a romantic outdoor patio. There are plenty of Southern treats to be enjoyed, which may be preceded by a hand-shaken cocktail such as the Key Lime martini. Appetizers to go with cocktails are also plentiful: think fried green tomatoes, oyster rémoulade or hush puppies. Bernie's is also famous for its crispy-outside/juicy-inside buttermilk fried chicken, a spicy, rich Creole gumbo, and blackened catfish served with an okra and tomato ragoût. There’s a long menu of sides that includes mac ‘n’ cheese and mashed potatoes with two choices of gravy. For dessert, indulge in a slice of pecan pie or a generous bowl of bananas Foster bread pudding bathed in a sticky caramel sauce. The inexpensive two-hour "happy hour" features po' boys, salads and bread pudding. "Soulful Sunday" brunch offers delights such as blackened catfish hash, beignets, and fried chicken and waffles. The place bustles on rowdy "Last Thursdays" held throughout the summer.
