Blue Hen brings together two trends: first, the transformation of Eagle Rock from an obscure bohemian hangout to a gentrified L.A. neighborhood; and second, the widening appeal of Vietnamese cuisine beyond the ethnic enclaves of the San Gabriel Valley and OC's Little Saigon. Blue Hen takes the essence of Vietnamese cooking and Americanizes it with laid-back seasonings. There is a strong dedication to organic ingredients from local family farms, and a large proportion of menu items are labeled gluten-free or vegan. You'll find the classic pho (traditional beef noodle soup) --- made here with organic chicken --- as well as curries and a satisfying chicken bánh mì sandwich with turmeric fries. And for dessert, there’s vegan bread pudding with caramel sauce and a nifty ginger bread pudding. With dark wood tables and banquettes, colorful abstract paintings and funky chandeliers, this cheerful storefront eatery has a hip sense of style.
