Chef Todd English, the man behind an army of mediocre-to-very good restaurants, gives New York a contemporary French restaurant. The approach is nothing new: wood-bathed and smart, with leather seats and banquettes and high ceilings, the venue (located in the InterContinental New York Times Square) is soothing in a way that would make you want to relax and dine a while. Despite the name and the billing, the dishes aren’t straight-up Gallic fare. Chef English takes a page out of the Jean-Georges notebook by incorporating worldly influences into the French menu. “Gnocchi” (note the quotes) are made from black olives and stuffed with Gorgonzola; salmon roulade, architecturally stacked, is infused with saffron; roasted short rib, which falls apart when it hits the fork, is accented by a truffle jus. Wine skirts the globe and the by-the-glass selection is way overpriced.
