There are no red lanterns and gold dragons here. Café Zen's walls are Creamsicle-colored and stenciled in black with dictionary definitions and chopstick diagrams. But that's not all that's unusual. This café offers simple, fresh, home-style cooking, mostly Chinese but with curries, plus Thai and sushi in the mix as well. Order "fan tsai," billed as a healthful balance of meat and vegetables, for the full expression of the kitchen's philosophy. It'll arrive as a delicately sauced heap of crisp-tender vegetables seasoned with the meat of your choice: shrimp, chicken, beef or a combination thereof. But even standards like kung pao chicken, garlic shrimp, and double-sautéed pork exhibit the same light hand. Beer and wine are served.
