Storico Restaurant Review:

The New York Historical Society got a serious revamp (at a cost of $85 million) in early 2012, and with it came Caffè Storico, an elegant but casual eatery helmed by Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr. One would think the menu would focus on historic New York cuisine, given where the restaurant is housed. Not so. The food is rustic Italian (the name means “Historic Caffe”). Saffron-laden fried rice balls (arancini) are a winning beginning to the meal. So are the tomato sauce-drenched veal-pork-beef meatballs. Gnocchi with a creamy truffle fonduta and the signature pappardelle with duck ragù, sprinkled with chocolate and orange, are standout pasta dishes. Very good and heartier fare includes tender olive oil-poached salmon and a dry-aged sirloin steak with roasted potatoes. The 50-bottle wine list is all Italian with some good selections by the glass.
