Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe, equal parts old-school diner and neighborhood coffee shop, embodies what the South End was before the moneymakers moved into their brownstones. Cops, cabbies and old-timers mingle with hipsters at the timeless counter stools and communal tables where cash is still the only accepted method of payment and breakfast is served all day. Western omelets and banana griddle pancakes that outsize their plates are legendary, as is the bologna and eggs; sandwiches like the hot roast beef with gravy and the sliced corned beef, as well as the chili dog, are unwieldy, wallet-friendly wonders. Come see how the other half of the South End lives --- every bit as good if not better than the swanky half. Since 1927, no less.
