Despite its natural habitat being west of the Mississippi River --- especially California --- and in a few locations abroad, The Counter broke burger ground with its Atlanta area unit. While some of the offerings are well executed, others leave us puzzled. Sweet potato fries are among the best we’ve tasted, and the crisp shoestring thin fries are delightful. And you can order a 50-50 mix. We also like being able to order a burger in any of three different sizes, and specifying it rare without getting an argument. Shakes are pretty good, too. Other pluses: Burgers come in chicken, turkey, bison (organic, so a $3 upcharge) and veggie (the latter vegan). Toppings range from free to $1.75. The grilled ham-and-Swiss sandwich works for those non-burger moments. And the burger may be enjoyed as a bowl, atop salad, without a bun for those watching carbs ($1 upcharge). Gluten-free options have been added to the menu, including the buns. There is a wine list, but it's not very interesting; we'd rather have one of the good brews.
