Namesake Dominick Pepe created the menu at this bistro at the corner of Christopher and Gay Streets, bringing a touch of Paris to the West Village. It’s a charming, small and romantic restaurant with a European atmosphere focusing on classic French comfort cuisine that includes starters of cheese or charcuterie boards, mussels in a saffron fennel broth, escargots, and a seared lobe of foie gras on a Belgian waffle. Duck confit, bouillabaisse, cassoulet, beef bourguignon and Châteaubriand for two are a few of the Gallic entrées to work your way through. Don’t overlook the sweet stuff: a light chocolate soufflé, crème brûlée, chocolate mousse or --- in European style --- that same cheese board for dessert are all worthy meal finishers. The wine menu is extensive; 50 percent are French wines and the rest is sourced internationally from a variety of regions. There’s a piano bar in the downstairs space that’s open for dinner nightly, and twice weekly it offers entertainment with a $10 cover charge.
