Duane's Prime Steaks & Seafood Restaurant Review:

Duane Roberts deserves to have this restaurant named after him. After all, he came to the rescue of the historic Mission Inn (where the spot is located) in 1992, saving it from probable destruction. This would have been a sad state of affairs since the block-long hotel (which Roberts restored to its original 1876 grandeur) has since been named a National Historic Landmark. The hotel, which is a mélange of architectural styles, remains a treasure and this slightly dated dining room is still the special occasion restaurant of choice in the Inland Empire, despite the emergence of many new, more contemporary challengers. Guests begin with lobster bisque with Chantilly tarragon and brandied mushrooms, lobster tempura with orange-chili sauce, or a shrimp cocktail (large shrimp in a distinctively piquant cocktail sauce). Steaks include cuts of Prime, wet-aged beef --- New York, filet mignon and a 20-ounce “rib chop” --- charbroiled to order. Fish selections vary with seasonal availability, but often include grilled Pacific salmon with a citrus butter sauce or seared sashimi-grade ahi complemented by ginger cream sauce. There’s pan-roasted duck and chargrilled free-range chicken breast, too. Also noteworthy are side orders of creamed spinach with shallots in a cream reduction, and truffled mac ‘n’ cheese. Among the desserts is a chocolate soufflé with Grand Marnier sauce. The wine list is exceptional but not overpriced, and service is professional and accommodating in this darkly romantic restaurant.
