Part of a national chain of upscale American bistros, Firebirds has become a go-to destination for thirty- and forty-somethings in Northern Virginia looking for a cool hangout with hot foods: think roaring fire pits in the back of the restaurant with smoky aromas wafting out the front door. You won’t find many culinary surprises, but chances are that most patrons are happy with their lobster-spinach queso starter, chunky burgers such as the chile-spiced Durango burger, and the sesame-crusted salmon with fried spinach. If they’re on the menu, don’t skip the carrot cake and the Key lime pie, both worth the extra calories. Despite the highfalutin menu, the atmosphere is totally casual, with large groups gathering for the cheery bar times: think signature martinis and margaritas, to say nothing of the extensive collection of wines.
