With a pleasing atmosphere boosted by serape-covered chairs and Santa Fe-blanket-upholstered banquettes, Green Chile Kitchen evokes the feeling of the Southwest. Green and red chiles are the cornerstones of the cuisine and feature prominently on the menu that includes red chile posole, green chile stew, carne adovada and a New-Mex-style smothered burrito. Don’t miss the green chile burger with jack cheese, the Navajo tacos on fry bread and the flat enchiladas with a fried egg on top. No meal here is complete without an order of sopapillas, the fried pillows of dough that diners fill with honey from the bears on the table. The menu offers a selection of hearty salads and lettuce tacos for special diets, as well as a host of Southwestern standards such as soft or crispy tacos, chile rellenos and tamales. The bar has kombucha and kefiry soda on tap and makes a few drinks with shrubs such as prickly pear or pineapple --- a nod to the fermenting craze. Margaritas are made with agave wine and house sangría with yerba mate. A wine list of a dozen options by glass or bottle and a selection of craft beers round out the drinks. Save room for a slice of the green chile apple pie, a New Mexico tradition.
