It’s been a long time since Baltimore high-rollers have been able to fly off to Havana for fine cigars, dulce de leche, and a taste of red-hot nightlife. But there is Havana Road, a low-key but delectable substitute. No, there are no cigars to be had on the premises (as per Maryland law) and no alcohol is served (although there’s a liquor store next door if you want to spike your virgin mojito), but the pretty, papaya-hued Towson café has a true island atmosphere, thanks to Marta Ines Quintana’s authentic, aromatic Cuban specialties. Slow-simmered dishes such as ropa vieja, arroz con pollo and lechon asado, plated with rice, black beans and plantains are solid satisfiers. Several involve the house-made “mojo” sauce of olive oil, citrus juices, onions, garlic and spices, and customers who get hooked on the irresistible blend can purchase it by the jar. Even the kids’ menu gets into the spirit, with a grilled queso sandwich made with Cuban bread, and PB&Js with sweet plantains.
