Izakaya Juban Restaurant Review:

Izakaya---Japanese pubs---are a way of life, and this one is clean, comfy, airy and foreigner-friendly. Pull up a stool around the U-shaped counter (or at a booth) and watch edamame, yakitori (grilled chicken on skewers---ask for the tsukune, savory chicken meatballs), karaage (bits of fried chicken) and shishamo (whole broiled smelts) or any of a hundred other small plates prepared before your eyes. Wash it all down with beer, saké or shochu, Japanese-style vodka made from sweet potato or barley. A traditional Japanese meal doesn’t end with dessert, so finish yours off with yaki-onigiri, a triangle of cooked rice brushed with soy sauce and grilled.
