THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Le Philosophe Restaurant Review:

Set in the former Hung Ry space on what might be one of lower Manhattan’s most architecturally striking blocks, this French restaurant is a sleeper hit. The interior is bedecked with images of famous French philosophers and the menu continues the theme with old-school Gallic dishes. Foie gras torchon is smooth and silky, while the country pâté is chunky and unctuous; both are quite satisfying, as are entrées of bacon-studded salmon and flat-iron steak with frites. For dessert, hope that the tarte Tatin is available, made with a shortbread base and served with buttermilk ice cream --- it’s a sweet way to end the meal. The French wine list is affordable, allowing diners to splurge a little or even order a second bottle.
