THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Maria Selma Restaurant Restaurant Review:

Maria Selma is a convivial place to chow down on reasonably priced Mexican cuisine in an atmosphere that evokes a cantina with its rustic tables, bright yellow walls, and paintings in the style of Diego Rivera. But the real draw is the huge patio with the palapa, one of the first Mexican-style thatched roofs in the city. It can get a little crowded and loud in the late evening hours, but we like to drop by at lunchtime for a margarita and the free house-fried tortilla chips served with spicy red salsa. While most of the dishes come from the old family recipes of owner Rene Hidalgo, some offerings are updated to create vegetarian or gluten-free meals. Start with the duck flautas, rolled and fried tacos with adobe sauce and sour cream. Then it’s on to the enchiladas poblano, chicken enchiladas smothered in chocolate mole sauce and jazzed up with red onions, farmers' cheese and sesame seeds. There are also plenty of tacos and seafood plates as well as tortas --- Mexican sandwiches made with thick, hearty bread. On weekends, stop in for breakfasts of huevos rancheros, an omelet with cactus or chilaquiles con pollo. For something sweet, try the sopaipillas finished with maple syrup. And if you have a large appetite, indulge in the brunch buffet, where you can taste a little bit of everything.
