THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mason Tavern Restaurant Review:

Several predecessors’ failures seemed to have made this space almost restaurant unfriendly, but Mason Tavern has conquered any negative vibes. Completely refurbishing the interior, the owners crafted an area that’s warmly lit and contemporary, centered around a bar. The comfort fare menu is rooted in Southern flavors but doesn't fear bringing on board the occasional tastes of other cuisines, such as beef Bolognese served over pappardelle and the hummus at the bar. Locally produced Springer Mountain chicken --- a beer-brined roasted half bird --- comes atop collard greens that chef Ben McCarter cooks to the proper stage of doneness, that is, tender. At dinner, most mains (except the steak) are priced well south of $20. Small plates make good noshes to accompany drinks, and a few, such as chicken tacos, with a salad could easily constitute a meal. The burger blends short rib meat and brisket. For a sweet ending, go for the coconut cream pie or the orange bread pudding. The wine list is short but supplies decent options by the glass at reasonable prices. But it’s less interesting than the brews lineup, which presents quite a few local quaffs on tap as well as a fine selection of bottled beers, among them Jailhouse stout.
