THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mehtaphor Restaurant Review:

Cozy, tiny Mehtaphor is a restaurant with a sense of whimsy. The menu at chef Jehangir Mehta’s second downtown restaurant is filled with impossible combinations of ingredients, like onion confit and grapefruit granita or pop rocks and oysters, all of which manage to work quite successfully. Cocktails set the scene with concoctions made with chili and coconut or sherbet and tequila, with the fun carrying through to appetizers including shaved foie gras on raspberry compote or beef tartare spiced up with Thai and Korean chilies and dressed with guacamole sorbet to help cut the heat. Entrées are playful but serious with a lamb shank coated in a sauce of fragrant spices from Persia and India, which is an ideal complement to the traditional Zoroastrian-influenced cod served at Persian weddings, here lightly slathered with coriander chutney. There’s also a full vegetarian menu and a short list of desserts illustrating Mehta’s skill as a pastry chef. Plates are generally small so you can devise your own fantasy menu. The funky setting, without any formal entryway, seems to fit just right. The wine list is short but there are over 20 selections offered by the glass.
