The large, bright restaurant’s raison d'être is regional cooking, which it promotes very well, and healthy- and special diet-based preparations. Lentil dumplings with crisp puris and potatoes in tamarind and mint yoghurt; whitebait in garlic, curry leaves and peppers; and lamb shanks braised in cloves and cardamom all are produced from the hard-working open kitchen. Mela is known for some of the best value lunches in town. Set 2-course lunch £9.95, 3 courses £15.95; pre-theatre 3 course menu £12.95.
