Mel's Hot Dogs Restaurant Review:

With one bite of a Mel's Chicago-style dog made with a Kosher hot dog and topped with barrel-cured sauerkraut, dill pickles, sweet Spanish onions and sweet pickle relish on a poppy seed bun, you can count on having sauce dribble down your chin and onto your shirt. Owner Mel Lohn has been selling hot dogs for many years, an idea he had when he headed out for a hot dog and couldn't find a stand in town. Mel's also is proud to say his Lite Mel wieners are "light dogs" --- sporting 70 percent less fat. The top dog on the menu, though, is the Chicago Beef & Sausage Combo (thin-sliced roast beef and pork sausage on a hoagie bun with bell peppers and a spicy au jus). There are some alternatives for those not hot for dogs, such as a fried chicken basket, a veggie burger and handmade smoked sausage dogs. But your best bet is to stick with the house specialty.
