Mezcalero Restaurant Review:

In the Historic Core on a bustling Broadway corner, Mezcalero offers cutting-edge mezcal cocktails, a fine, far-ranging mezcal/tequila list and a hip, south of the border DTLA vibe. Mixologist Nathan McCullough’s inventive concoctions incorporate fresh, offbeat ingredients, from bell peppers to pineapple, celery and mint, as well as house-made burnt tortilla syrup and habanero tincture. Don’t miss the provocative Oaxaca Shame blending roasted corn infused mezcal, Hendricks gin, crème de violette, dry vermouth, hojo santo leaf tincture and absinthe. Happy hour, when all cocktails are $7, is a great time to roll out an explorative tasting with friends. As you may consider the drinks culinary creations, adding a few tacos, alongside outstanding guac and house-made chips, makes it a fine casual dinner, a primer for an evening out or a perfect late-night nosh (it’s open ’til 2 a.m. daily). Look for savory roasted pork or pulled beef tenderloin tacos and octopus tacos that arrive with refreshing apple pico de gallo. Vegetarians can opt for a colorful cactus taco and elote with lime butter and guajillo pepper. Find a sweet flourish with warm churro balls. The bar also shows off South American wine, craft beer on tap and Mexican beer in bottles and cans (for only $3 during happy hour).
