Mimi Cheng's Restaurant Review:

Hannah and Marian Cheng grew up eating homemade Taiwanese dumplings, but when they searched for their favorite comfort food in New York City, they came up empty-handed. And so they opened Mimi Cheng’s in the East Village, and after success a second spot on Broome Street in NolIta. The storefront is simple and bright, with crisp white walls, a picture of a pineapple and an open kitchen where customers can watch the magic happen. The stars of the show are dumplings crafted from the recipe of the Chengs’ mom. Choose from crispy and pan-fried or silky and steamed, and stuffed with juicy pasture-raised pork and baby bok choy (the reinvented classic) or organic chicken and zucchini (Mimi Cheng’s). They sell more than dumplings. Get your veggies with Taiwanese street-cart greens topped with crispy fried shallots, or warm up a cold day with 12-hour chicken broth. Mimi Cheng’s sources its produce from local farms and uses eco-friendly packaging. Take your food to go or settle at one of only four tables. Sip house-brewed green tea or lemon-spiked seltzer while you wait.
