Motorino East Village Restaurant Review:

When the prickly pizzaiolo behind Una Pizza Napoletana packed his pies and headed out west, there was much head scratching on the part of pizza cognoscenti in New York. Who would take over the fantastic oven in his East Village storefront? Brooklyn pizza place Motorino forded the East River to give things a try, and for the most part, their product is actually an improvement on the pies sold here during the Una Pizza Napoletana days. For one, pizzas are cheaper. Second, the whole operation is friendlier and more flexible, from the soothing green and white striped wallpaper to the additions to the menu. Beyond standards like the margherita, diners can now get Brussels sprouts and bacon, sopressata and more on their pizzas. And the pies are just as good, with a puffy crust that gets a good char in the oven, yet manages to stand up to the ingredients on top of it without getting too gooey in the center. Also an upgrade is the appetizers, particularly the heirloom tomato salad and the octopus conserva.
