Nirvana Indian Cuisine Restaurant Review:

Authentic Indian cuisine is hard to come by in New Orleans, even with its respectable collection of ethnic restaurants. But Uptown has at least one refuge for saag paneer and tandoori chicken, serving the locals there for more than 30 years. Nirvana's dining room is sophisticated but warm, awash in royal blue, red and gold, with Indian-inspired cushioned furniture, elephant friezes and servers dressed as if for a formal event. Food is liberally seasoned, even when it comes off the daily lunch buffet. Sunday lunch is especially happening out on the sidewalk tables, where carefree diners take in the newspaper with their dal. While wines are available, there is not a great emphasis placed on the limited selections. Desserts are tempting, particularly the saffron kulfi, which is an Indian-style ice cream; alternatively, try the gulab jamun, fried milk balls in rose syrup.
