Okane Restaurant Review:

Looking into Okane through the wall-size plate glass windows that front the drab industrial end of Townsend Street would lead one to believe it is a simple sushi spot, with its wooden tables, bamboo blinds, Japanese curtains and a prominent sushi bar in front. While sushi plays a role, Okane is predominantly an izakaya, focusing on small plates meant to be shared and enjoyed with drinks. Saké by the cup or bottle, wine by the glass or bottle and beer are listed on one menu while the meal options are on another. Dishes favor traditional Japanese approaches, but with creative updates. Anago tempura is a soft, meaty take on classic tempura. Saké lees-cured Alaskan cod offers something incrementally different than the traditional soy marinade, with a modest touch of sweetness. Vegetable, meat and fish items are offered in variety, as is a full sushi and sashimi selection with nigiri and specialty rolls. If the saké doesn't serve as your dessert, sesame or green tea ice cream is a refreshing finish. Try a range of unique flavors in the Japanese-style weekend brunch.
