Real Food Cafe Restaurant Review:

A basement location in a frenetic office block made the original outpost of Real Food Cafe less than inviting despite the tasty fare. So we were happy when this second and much more stylish outlet opened at just above street level and right off Orchard Road, Singapore's main thoroughfare. Current magazines are available for browsing, and they are also a sign that service will move at a more leisurely pace than much of Singapore's go-go economy. Well worth the wait are green juices like carrot, ginger, pineapple and cucumber, lettuce and apple that have more kick than you would think. All fruits, leaves and herbs are 100 percent organic and all enhance salads like the beetroot and matchstick apple in minty lemon dressing and the classic green salad, which is actually a rarity in this town, made with leafy greens, boiled beans, cherry tomatoes, olives, radishes and avocado slices plus roasted seeds and nuts. Pastas are wheat- and gluten-free, like the grilled vegetables in tomato sauce, but taste authentically Italian, as do the thin-crust pizzas --- munch on handmade dumplings, steamed or fried, until your pie is ready. The menu clearly states that the mixture for the signature dessert, strawberry-banana pancakes, is made on the spot, so while you wait for those, sample a few flavors of Singapore's sweet treat, Popaganda popsicles, in inspired organic flavors like banana chocolate, mixed berry with shiso and lychee beet. Finish off this healthy banquet with genmaicha brown rice tea imported from Japan, warm oat milk with almond, or a fair-trade organic hot chocolate.
