Rice House at Barnsley Gardens Restaurant Review:


The ruins of Godfrey Barnsley's nineteenth-century Italian-Renaissance style mansion lie just up the slope from this restaurant, housed in a simple frame residence built in 1854 and moved in 1994 to its current location on the estate. The former outdoor patio became glass-enclosed, adding a comfortable dining space but preserving the view of the grounds. Several smaller rooms enable private dining for parties of various sizes. Executive chef Charles Vosburgh has retired with the title “emeritus,” and Adam Hayes has taken over. While the menu changes frequently, you may find more attention paid to regional and local cuisine and raw materials. The wine list is a veritable tome, and includes such icons as Silver Oak and Screaming Eagle, the latter particularly rarely seen on restaurant wine lists. Rice House often hosts wine dinners, too.
