Saloon Restaurant Review:

The over-decorated Victorian dining rooms are always crowded and noisy, and the polished wood, brass fittings and stained glass always gleam. Waitresses breathlessly recite long lists of daily specials, and then deliver portions of food that are as outrageous as the décor. Steaks and chops may be the Saloon's bastion, but the Italian specials (after all, it is in South Philadelphia) are well done. Start with, but share, the antipasto-inspired Saloon salad, a hearty mix of cheese, peppers and onions over greens. Clams Pavorotti stuffed with shrimp, crab meat and béchamel are a rich indulgence. If radicchio sautéed with lump crab meat and shiitake mushrooms is featured, by all means order it, and also the braciole rolled with spinach, pancetta and Parmesan. The wine list is as enormous as the portions. The bar scene hosts a lively mix of neighborhood regulars, trolling singles and date-night couples.
