Soy Restaurant Review:

Located near the corner of Fairmount and St. Laurent, Soy is both literally and figuratively far from Chinatown. Chef Suzanne Liu draws much of her inspiration from Chinese traditions, but she and her multicultural kitchen staff revisit them in a modern manner, even as they add Thai, Japanese or Korean dishes to the menu. The lime-green façade, simply featuring the restaurant’s name, clearly states its case: the clichés of Chinese restaurants are not on the menu. Inside, the brick wall and straightforward but elegant chairs and plates give the restaurant a laid-back yet trendy feel. The same goes for the food, which allows for a quick lunch as well as an elaborate dinner with wine or saké. General Tso’s chicken benefits from a light touch without losing its sweet and salty character, while a dish of sesame and peanut noodles with chicken and cucumber is head and neck above your average takeout. Pad thai, like the General Tso’s, is nicely balanced between personal interpretation and tradition.
