THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Sugarbacon Proper Kitchen Restaurant Review:

Housed in a former 80-year-old service station in the historic McKinney downtown area, this friendly gathering place features blue and gold accents, exposed brick, natural concrete floors, walls finished with reclaimed oak and artistic elements like steel, copper and grey subway tile. A climate-controlled patio also encourages year-round al fresco dining. Chef Jon Thompson, whose career includes stints at Samar and Stampede 66, has created an uncomplicated and market-focused menu that struts a smoked Berkshire pork chop with green chile hominy casserole; a 12-ounce steak, sourced from nearby Local Yocal, that's served with mushrooms and potatoes; and house-made tater tots with pulled pork, pimento cheese and barbecue aïoli. Other favorites like the shrimp and grits, Parmesan-herb gnocchi and beer-braised short ribs with roasted carrots and creamy potato purée round out the menu. There are four desserts to choose from, including the coffee and doughnuts and butterscotch banana pudding. The owners hired noted Dallas beverage director and bartender Sean Conner to implement the restaurant's "garden to glass" cocktail program, which emphasizes fresh herbs grown onsite. There are also local craft beers, coupled with a globetrotting wine list that zigzags from California to South Africa.
