The meatballs --- you will never forget the meatballs --- huge, pillowy soft and loaded with herbs and cheese, flavorful enough to do any Italian mama proud. They’re offered as an appetizer that’s generous enough for the table to share. Practice restraint because there’s much savor at this beautifully appointed, casual café located next door to Il Mulino, the formal restaurant. Both are just off the Taj Mahal’s casino, but despite proximity to the noisy gaming hall, both venues offer serenity that comes from professional service and the enjoyment of fine food. The two places share a kitchen, which is probably why, despite its more relaxed manners, Trattoria Il Mulino’s prices are not all that different, but then neither is the quality or the generosity of the fare. The kitchen produces essentially simple, earthy dishes from Abruzzo, notable for flavors fresh and clean. Seafood salad is a veritable aquarium of cold shrimp, scallops, mussels, clam, calamari and octopus, lightly dressed with a little lemon and a few drops of quality extra virgin olive oil. Pastas are skillfully sauced; beef is robust. Desserts are few, but take delight in the two giant cannoli that arrive at the table bursting with creamy sweetened mascarpone and garnished with seasonal fruit. The wine list is a bit pricey but offers distinguished choices and is especially strong in Italian labels.
