A standard suburban Atlanta strip mall is home to Waraku Japanese Restaurant, which stands out for its unique touches, rigorous authenticity, and friendly, mature sushi chefs. At lunch, local office workers come for a good meal before returning to cubicles. Girlfriends gather in the small private rooms to celebrate events or just share gossip. Among the quality sushi and sashimi offerings, we recommend the tuna and hotate (scallop) or amaebi (sweet shrimp), and there’s a raft of small grilled dishes. We're especially fond of the pork belly, which comes in grilled squares of lightly caramelized meat, salt and pepper its only adornment. These are called shioyaki, says chef/owner Michelle Kishida. Sometimes, for a surprise, she will send out little treats such as a tiny flan-like custard. For a quaff, get a fine cold saké, a Japanese beer or tea.
