Surrounded by Italian joints, Washington Place Bistro & Inn is a refreshing change of pace for Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood. The lobby features an ultra-hip bar and lounge for customers to sit and sip while modern décor and a monochromatic color palette usher the rest of the castle, previously home to The Baricelli Inn, into the modern dining era. The menu by chef John Roskowski is meticulously executed but surprisingly approachable. Start with the braised beef and wild mushroom ragù pierogi, topped with a deep demi-glace and spicy horseradish crème fraîche. Among entrées, you pretty much can’t go wrong with any of the choices. Try the barbecue pork shank served with cheesy grits and spinach and the duck confit risotto with crispy duck skin. For dessert, do not miss the donut bread pudding made with pastries from the legendary local bakery Presti’s. When it comes to wine, the price and the pour size of the by-the-glass options leave something to be desired; bottles offer a better deal and selection.
