The Whale Wins Restaurant Review:

With a wood-fired oven as a centerpiece, this bright eatery's semi-industrial space features high ceilings with exposed ducts and light fixtures shaped into letters spelling out "HELLO" overhead. Guests can choose from patio seating, the dining room or the L-shaped marble bar that chefs regularly use for prep work. Chef Renee Erickson keeps her patrons happy and satisfied with comfort food that draws inspiration from England, southern Europe and beyond. Shareable plates include sardines on toast with curried tomato paste and shaved fennel, and salt-roasted Painted Hills filet mignon served with sauce verte, potatoes and fresh horseradish cream. The aforementioned oven plays a key part in turning out vegetable dishes like the roasted cauliflower salad with cilantro vinaigrette, radishes, green garlic aïoli, a six-minute egg and smoked paprika oil. Cheeses come from local suppliers such as Little Brown Farms on Whidbey Island, while among the desserts may be a thick chocolate brownie or sour cherry fool and rhubarb Eton Mess (a British treat made with fruit, cream and pieces of meringue). The worldly wine list has been well adapted to the menu, and a full bar is available. Valet parking is not offered, but there is a lot behind the building as well as spots on the street.
