Woodman's Restaurant Review:

Whether or not Chubby Woodman really invented the fried clam nearly a century ago, this legendary clam shack can nonetheless lay claim to being "home of the fried clam." Today, with its setting beside the Essex River, the no frills bare-bones fast food joint is packed both inside and out all summer long. Out of season, however, things slow down and it can make for a nice escape from the city. Beyond the big bellied clams, we also like the sweet fried scallops, the salmon burger and thick clam chowder. There's also a respectable lobster roll. Hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, a grilled chicken sandwich and a steak burger are a land-lubber's only options --- unless you can make a meal of onion rings available by the half pint, pint or quart (we can, and happily). In summertime, prepare for at least an hour-long wait. Be sure to check out The Shop at Woodman's for a hot fudge sundae made with Gifford's ice cream from Maine.
