THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Zenbu Restaurant Review:

Sushi lovers’ heaven might be the alternative name for Zenbu, La Jolla’s hip hot spot for all things fresh and Asian. Kick off the drama with chef Tim Johnson’s hot volcanic rock appetizer. This sizzling rock serves as the “grill” for thin slices of Montana vintage Prime sirloin. Slap it on the rock and watch it cook before your eyes. Move on to the crispy local rockfish (fresh out of the tank), another visually impressive dish---crunchy and salty on the outside and slightly sweet within. Sashimi and sushi selections are many, but we enjoy local specials like the Reidy Roll (tempura-fried hamachi, tuna, avocado, masago and shiso with a choice of sriracha and ponzu sauces) and the Wind-n-Sea (freshwater eel, tempura banana, avocado and cucumber). You can also create your own bento box with choices of chicken teriyaki, “wok’d” vegetables, tempura and tofu. Also available are grilled fish fresh off owner Matt Rimel’s boat, noodle bowls, braised short ribs and filet mignon. Don’t miss the creative sakétinis and specialty saké. Late-nighters can wander next door to Zenbu’s upscale lounge, Koi, which serves an abbreviated sushi menu and keeps the Zenbu party rolling.
