Azucar Ice Cream Company Restaurant Review

: Located in Little Havana, this tiny but hard-to-miss ice cream parlor specializes in Miami native-owner Suzy Batlle’s homemade “Cuban ice cream.” That doesn’t mean you can’t find classic flavors, such as unusually rich pistachio. But most bypass plain vanilla for uniquely local Abuela Maria: vanilla ice cream studded with sparkling red guava bits, cream cheese, and Maria cookies. You might want to keep the children away from the café con leche ice cream, infused with shots of infamously potent Cuban coffee plus some hot fudge, but it’s a sophisticated and remarkably effective pick-me-up. Seasonal tropical flavors like guarapiña (sugarcane and pineapple), mamey, and passion fruit are especially recommended, as are combinations not so tropical but utilizing locally grown fruits, herbs, and even vegetables: strawberries with balsamic vinegar; lemon/basil; sweet corn. Obviously it’s not your usual ice cream, but virtually unlimited samples are served with smiles before you commit to a cone, which, by the way, include handmade regular or chocolate-dipped waffle cones.
