| Walk into Derry Street for the entrance to a restaurant with glorious views from the 7th floor of what was once one of London's most venerable shops. In summer get there early to grab a table on the terrace (not bookable in advance), and from May to September there’s the added attraction of a barbecue at lunch, Monday to Friday, and at dinner Monday to Thursday. The roof gardens themselves are one floor down, complete with unlikely, real pink flamingoes and pools. A contemporary European menu hits all the right buttons and dishes are skillfully and delicately prepared, from sautéed scallops with peas and beans, marjoram and smoked bacon and saffron risotto as starters to roast lamb rump, or fillet of sea bass with potatoes, basil, olives, tomato and vierge oil. There’s a good wine list, heavily weighted to the New World. Service is professional and smart. It's very romantic, effortlessly imparting the feeling of being somewhere other than right in central London. |
