Balaban's Restaurant Review

: If wine-lovers could build their own amusement park, it would feel a lot like Balaban’s. The shop stocks more than 860 different wines that range from the equivalent of a gentle twirl (the everyday bargain bottles) to a rollercoaster (the 250 rare, maturing vintages in the Library Wine Collection, available in two-ounce pours during Sunday brunch). Choose from a variety of three-glass tasting flights (for example, two 2013 Pinot Grigios from Italy and a 2014 Pinot Gris from Oregon) and, for starters, a delicate trout pancake with corn and chives, topped with horseradish crème fraîche, or cucumber bisque with a swirl of lemon and chunks of diced cucumber. Beef Wellington and herb-crusted lamb chop take longtime customers back to the restaurant’s former location in the Central West End, founded more than 40 years ago. This offshoot is less formal and more focused on wine pairings with meals --- there’s no retail markup and only an $8 corkage fee. Beer and cocktails are available and find some takers during weekday happy hours, but the happiest hours of the week come Saturday afternoons during the popular wine tastings. Linger afterward for a pastry-wrapped apple with caramel ice cream and or pecan pie with a glass of port.
