Bar Americain Restaurant Review

: Bobby Flay has done more than his share to elevate the status of American fare. At Bar Americain at Mohegan Sun --- one of two casino restaurants the celebrity chef masterminds --- don't be surprised if even the spicy-sweet steak sauce, made with honey, Dijon, maple syrup and tongue-zinging horseradish, makes you want to lick the bowl. This bold, Modernist space with a warm orange glow has a decadent vibe, and even though tables for two or four and cozy banquettes for six are positioned quite close, each feels intimate. Stylish shellfish cocktails and other raw bar offerings from oysters to chilled half lobster compete with down-home appetizers like Gulf shrimp and grits. If you're tempted by the buttery, spice-rubbed rib-eye, definitely go the "surf" route to start. But honestly, Flay's fish dishes are the stars. Florida-style mahi mahi stays moist and firm thanks to its thin plantain coat. Mussels and fries get an all-American makeover with green chile broth. And Fulton Fish Market Cioppino is a shellfish-loaded stew that celebrates American excess. The list of wines by the bottle is extensive, by the glass, less so, especially if you want to pair a sparkling selection with secret-recipe fried chicken. The dessert menu is the one place in the casino where you're guaranteed riches: our choice, espresso and cocoa nib crème brûlée, is the lightest option.
