| When the interior of a restaurant is designed to look like the inside of a barrel (and the place is even called “The Barrel”), the bibulous diner has high expectations. And such is the case at this East Village restaurant and wine bar. The menu is loaded with affordable pan-European tapas dishes and many of them make for nice snacks while working your way through a wine menu that travels even further than the food menu---from Europe to Latin America to California. The fried cod fritters achieve that combination of crispy on the outside but gooey on the inside. Chicken liver comes topped with Marsala jelly and apple slices. Similarly, the prosciutto and semi-sweet sun-dried tomato flatbread achieves that fine balance between savory and saccharine. All the better to go with your wine. |
