bashi, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

bashi Restaurant Review

: Located adjacent to the pool and across from Catalina Kitchen, bashi is Terranea Resort’s contemporary Asian dining concept. During the day, natural light streams in the blue-accented dining room and bar. There’s also al fresco seating on the spacious patio. Servers enthusiastically guide guests through the generous menu of small plates. An ideal starter is the dim sum-like chicken dumplings. Shaking beef --- the most universally recommended dish --- is indeed the strongest. It’s tender, with just the right notes of seasoning, but add a hint of the lime sauce on the side for more acidic complexity. Unfortunately, the ingredients don’t meld as well in the five-spice roast duck salad. Somehow, the duck ends up bland and the salad salty. Shanghai-style noodles, on the other hand, are solid in garlicky goodness. It can be ordered with beef, chicken, shrimp or tofu, but is just fine on its own. Late-afternoon hours bring a menu of sushi and rolls. End the meal with green tea crème brûlée. Daily happy hour specials (from 4 p.m.-6 p.m., and Fri.-Sat. from 9 p.m.-11 p.m.) include half-off sushi rolls and special prices on sakés.
