| Basil Leaf offers authentic Thai flavors in such dishes as a seared pork-and-shrimp dumpling served in a pool of cilantro-infused soy vinaigrette; a young, green coconut filled with shrimp, scallops, eggplant and red curry with the coconut's own meat, water and milk; a nicely fried soft-shell crab; and mee krob, a nest of crispy fried noodles studded with roasted shrimp, chicken and fresh vegetables in a wine and chili reduction. Many main dishes may be adapted for vegetarian purposes. A sushi menu includes a line-up of inventive rolls, and small plates provide yet another way to enjoy the cooking. Green tea ice cream and mango sorbet, fried banana rolls, and fresh mango with coconut milk sticky rice pudding comprise the sweet endings. The wine list is not extensive, but there are several by-the-glass offerings, and the inclusion of sweet plum wine is a welcome addition. The cozy dining room is complemented by the live oaks arching across South Carrollton Avenue, just outside the windows. |
