| An exotic destination with a menu that suggests Southeast Asia---even the décor and name evoke mysterious Indonesia---Batik offers a mixed menu of pan-Asian goodies, going from a Shanghai spring roll to start to a Thai yellow curry as a main course. As with any pan-Asian meal, however, the mix-and-match enterprise may miss the mark, as it does here with the Thai noodle dish kway teow with brown sauce, meat and broccoli that lacks that characteristic flavor layering of true Thai cooking. The all-Asia dumplings---from Indian, Thai, Chinese and American vegetarian--have character, and the grilled beef salad makes for a tasty entrée. But the Thai tom yam soup was all wrong, and the limited dessert menu might not seal the deal. Look for sticky rice with kiwi, flan and fried plantains. |
