| Take a knockout location at Goleta Beach Park, add a creative chef who makes the most of steaks, seafood and pasta, and you have the Beachside Café. The sunny main room looks out over the sand to the busy Goleta Pier and Santa Barbara Channel. The glass-enclosed patio has a breathtaking view of the sunset over the water and the nearby University of California at Santa Barbara. The airport’s right next door, so you get an interesting mix of students, faculty, beach-goers, pilots and crew, and other airport shufflers. Chef Carlos Ramirez, former sous chef at Chicago’s plush Pump Room, says his signature entrée is the Alaskan halibut stuffed with Dungeness crab, baked with a goat cheese crust and served over citrus beurre blanc. We especially enjoyed the appetizers: bay shrimp quesadillas, crab cakes with shiitake mushrooms and onions, and seared ahi with baked Parmesan tomatoes served with a green salad. Real seafood fans can stick with daily selections from the raw bar. The wine list is strong on local bottles. |
