Beans & Cornbread: A Soulful Bistro Restaurant Review: This 80-seat spot is done up in a sophisticated black, green and sand-hued palette and is decked with vintage "Life" magazine covers of the Will Mastin Trio, Coretta King and Diana Ross. It attracts not only crowds who grew up on Hoppin' John and fried chicken but also those to whom down-home dishes are a revelation. Chef John Arnold’s experience in upscale restaurants becomes evident in dishes that range from meatloaf and baby-back ribs to collard greens and country seasoned pork chops in red eye gravy, which somehow seem more refined than one might expect. There's also Cajun grilled shrimp and andouille sausage, served with buttery grits. Can't decide? How about the Bayou combo with your choice of three proteins, such as pork chops, catfish and rib tips? Don't miss the candied sweet potatoes as a side. We also like the Sunday brunch, an extravaganza of true soul food classics and cocktails such as peach Bellinis and mimosas. Of course, we'd be remiss to not mention the grape Kool-Aid martinis.
