Beaterville Cafe Restaurant Review: This popular North Portland spot expanded beyond its breakfast offerings to a broader menu of typical diner items, but most patrons stick with tried-and-true morning fare. The big and messy egg scrambles, such as the Salmon Street option, are the most popular, but you may also order "sweet stuff" such as french toast croissants. Homemade biscuits and strawberry jam are almost like those mom made. Non-breakfast plates are basic, but healthfully enhanced with homemade bread, crispy fresh vegetables in the salads, and lean ground beef or meat-substitute for the burgers. Vegetarians, vegans, and the gluten-free crowd will find many possibilities, which may include replacing the eggs in scrambles with tofu, lightening coffee with hemp milk, and so forth. Expect a wait on Saturdays and Sundays, but free coffee is served to spice up the delay.
