Berlin Bistro Restaurant Review:

This compact venue located just north of downtown Long Beach replicates the vibe worthy of the term bistro. Eclectic tunes spinning from the adjacent record store are heard as you sit in the space’s mélange of bright modern woods, old-school brick walls and quasi-communal tables, creating an atmosphere that coaxes creative thoughts and conversation over craft beer or wine. Executive chef Tim Balen matches the allure of the ambience by creating satisfying seasonal cuisine. Starters are prepared simply and smartly, such as the mushroom crostini with blue cheese or smoked salmon flatbread that’s actually served on flatbread, as opposed to thin-crust pizza dough. Main dishes range from elevated easy fare like the bison burger with Gruyère and caramelized onions to more complex plates such as the spicy shrimp and grits with bacon and braised chard. In true bistro fashion, locals can also swing by in the morning for their coffee fix. They can stay awhile and enjoy several intriguing breakfast items, including vegetarian tofu scramble or house-made granola served in a Mason jar.
