Bernie's Southern Bistro Restaurant Review: On a drizzly Portland afternoon, Bernie's is a good place to daydream about warmer climes. There's plenty of Southern treats to be enjoyed in the cozy, inviting setting. The honest cooking is well suited to the eclectic Northeast neighborhood of art galleries and shops. Start with a hand-shaken cocktail such as the Key lime martini, accompanied by appetizers like fried green tomatoes, oyster rémoulade or hush puppies. Bernie's is known for its crispy-outside/juicy-inside buttermilk fried chicken; spicy, rich Creole gumbo; and blackened catfish served with an okra and tomato ragoût. There’s a long menu of sides that includes mac ‘n’ cheese and mashed potatoes with two choices of gravy. End your meal with pecan pie or a generous bowl of bananas Foster bread pudding bathed in a sticky caramel sauce. The outdoor patio is a romantic place to while away a sultry summer night. |
